Before Batman, Michael Keaton starred in a 1986 movie called Gung Ho, which was not, as you might imagine, a story about America’s foreign policy but about the auto industry. The plot was in the “clash of cultures” genre and it followed the takeover of a struggling American car factory by a Japanese auto giant. Efficient, robot-like Japanese managers fought with their slovenly, free-thinking blue collar workers but eventually they all put aside their differences to save the failing factory.

Nissan Motor Wednesday released data

Japan’s three largest car makers saw domestic auto production rise in July due to a one-off factor, but the outlook for the industry is still uncertain due to sluggish local demand and the impact of a global economic slowdown on U.S. and European sales.
Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO), Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO) and Nissan Motor Co. (7201.TO) Wednesday released data showing a jump in July output as year-earlier figures were artificially low due to a major quake that forced the companies to temporarily stop production.

can you clarify facts about the downside of buying no-name gas

Q. Given the high price of gas, and the gap in price between no-name gas and the big brand names in some areas, can you clarify facts about the downside of buying no-name gas? Will it hurt performance? And, more importantly, will it harm my engine?

A. The federal government requires all gasoline to meet a minimum standard for both octane and quality. Does that mean that brand name gas is the same as no-name gas? Not necessarily. Brand-name gas may have more of the detergent additives that help keep the fuel system clean. So will you harm your car by using generic gasoline? In my opinion, no, although I’m sure I’ll get e-mails to the contrary.

Massive declines in pickup sales, combined with stronger sales of cars, means that the Toyota Camry will likely pass the Ford F-Series as the best-selling vehicle line in America this year, according to Kimberly Rodriguez, principal of Grant Thornton Advisory Services Automotive Platform. She also expects Honda Motor Co. to surpass Chrysler LLC as the No. 3 automaker in the United States.

F-Series sales were down 22% through July, with 319,542 units sold. The Toyota Camry, meanwhile, posted flat sales through July, with 282,012 units sold.

When you drive California’s legendary ‘el Camino Real’ — the Royal Highway — you’ll pass hundreds of road markers crowned with symbolic church bells reminding you of the original purpose of the track — now a four-lane highway — that winds through the coastal range linking a succession of Spanish missions: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Jose, among the many.
